Seas Unexplored
SSAATTBB - 4'20''
Seas Unexplored - Sibelius mock up. A workshop recording of this piece is available upon request.
Only 5% of the sea has been explored. The remaining 95% is one enormous mystery of untouched waters. The inspiration for this work occurred as I was looking out from the shore of New Brighton Beach, Christchurch and trying to imagine what was out beyond the horizon. I was struck with both a sense of fear and reverence, as one might when trying to comprehend the size of a galaxy. It seemed bizarre that the parts of the ocean which host raging waves and dark sea floors were also connected to the shore upon which I sat. In that moment it felt as though this great uncontainable ocean was humbling itself as it quietly lapped the shore and kindly washed the sand off my feet.
Text:
Look out from the comfort of shore.
Beyond the horizon are seas unexplored.
Think of the waters out of reach,
the strength of crashing waves and hidden floors,
and you will be filled with fearful reverence.
I am humbled in it's mighty presence.
Yet this same sea subdues itself,
in gentle waves it laps the shore.
It calls me to dip in my toes
and let the ocean wash my feet.
