As the World Turns - performed by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Vincent Hardaker.
This piece was composed in 2021 for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as part of the Rising Star Young Composer-in-Residence programme. As the World Turns was inspired by the idea of a Viennese waltz of astronomical proportions, depicting the Earths’ natural waltz as it orbits, spinning and turning on its axis around the Sun. This is, of course, how we end up with our sense of time, framed in days and seasons, as symbolised by the clock. The piece shifts between the slow, epic turn of the Earth, and the ticking clock as it keeps in step with the planet’s orbit. Listen out for a nod to the Second Viennese school, with a quote from Schoenberg’s Die Jakobsleiter woven in.
